U.S.S. Defiant by Tomek

17-05-2020: Tomek from Poland sent me several pictures of the papercraft U.S.S. Defiant that he built!

From the looks of it I think it is the redraw version that Bill Perry made of my original hand drawn papercraft, and it looks like Tomek added some extra details of himself too, like weathering the exhaust vents and thickening and off-setting some of the pieces for added depth! :o)

picture 2 | picture 3 | picture 4 | picture 5 | picture 6

The end result looks very good, and it’s great to hear that he had a fun time building it!

Thank you for building a Ninjatoes’ papercraft model!

U.S.S. Defiant & Monitor by Bones McCoy

03-01-2016: The starship in the picture above looks like the U.S.S. Defiant, but it’s not: it’s the U.S.S. Monitor, another retexture by Bones McCoy! ;o)

It’s based on the descriptions of the U.S.S. Monitor in the novels “The Return” and “Preserver” written by William Shatner.

In those novels, the U.S.S. Monitor is a modified Defiant-class starship with a dark, microdiffracted carbon coated hull for extra stealth, sent on a mission to destroy the Borg homeworld…

I haven’t read the novels myself, but I’ve always found the Defiant a very cool looking ship, and it looks great in its Monitor colours too:

picture 2 | picture 3

Like before, Bones allowed me to share his retextured parts for those that want to build this new version, you can get them from the U.S.S. Defiant download post again: link

14-11-2009: You may remember I posted Bones’ retexture of the U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205 a little while back? Well, here’s a picture of it, by Bones himself: picture

And here’s another one, of the bottom this time! You can see the extra details in the textures that Bones added, but because the parts have stayed the same, you can still use Bill Perry’s redraw instructions to build it!

Thank you for retexturing and building a Ninjatoes’ papercraft model!

Star Trek: The Next Generation Enterprise-D by Link

29-05-2014: This papercraft Enterprise-D in front of the neat “Star Trek: The Next Generation” background was built by Link Talbain as a gift for his mother, who is a big fan of the series! (if only all moms were that cool…!)

The paper model is quite tricky to build I think, because many of the parts are very small and thin: it took Link almost a month, and he says it literally made him sweat sometimes, but he feels very happy with the results. ;o)

As an extra finishing touch, Link painted the display stand gold, so it really looks like a real Star Trek logo (and because his papercraft Enterprise-D deserves it of course!)

He also made a several more pictures of the details of his papercraft Enterprise-D, but you can only see them if you’re his Facebook Friend (and believe me, they look just as good too!): Link’s Facebook Profile

Thank you for building a Ninjatoes’ papercraft model!

U.S.S. Defiant with LED lights by Shy

06-01-2014: The picture above shows a papercraft U.S.S. Defiant, built by Shy from one of the repainted versions that Bill Perry and Bones McCoy made from my original hand-drawn and water-coloured version.

But this one picture doesn’t tell the whole story: Shy built over a hundred paper models already, and despite having some problems buildings it, he wanted to make his papercraft U.S.S. Defiant light up with LED lights! ;o)

Have a look at these pictures with all the papercraft parts laid out, and the wiring for the LED lights:
picture 2 | picture 3 | picture 4picture 5 | picture 6

And here are a few more pictures with the lights activated in the end:
picture 7 | picture 8 | picture 9

The switch for the lights is on the stand that Shy made for his papercraft U.S.S. Defiant, here’s a link to the video he sent me showing me how it works: http://youtu.be/3hOt-E7T0ig

It looks really marvellous, don’t you think so too? ;o)

07-01-2014: Shy sent me some more pictures of the first “real” papercraft project he used LED lights in, a little diorama of a Battlestar Galactica Re-imagined Cylon Raider and Viper Mark II (from “Jay’s Box of Sci-Fi CardToys” I think?): picture 1

He made it as a birthday gift for his brother, with a light-up Battlestar Galactica logo in the middle of the styrofoam base, and of course, the little spaceships themselves have some LED lights too:
picture 2 | picture 3

The engines are illuminated (which caused a little bit of a problem because Shy couldn’t find any purple LED lights for the engines of the Cylon Raider; so instead, he used blue LED lights covered in red cellophane ;o) and of course the red “eye” of the Cylon Raider: video ! ;o)

Surprisingly, Shy didn’t think the trickiest part was building the paper models or all that soldering, but masking the interior of the paper models (with black tape and paint) so the light would only shine out where he wanted to:
picture 4 | picture 5

There are some things he learned to do a little bit differently on his newer models though, like that he doesn’t have to use cellophane, because the LED lights are bright enough to shine through the paper parts themselves, and he doesn’t have to use such thick wires:
picture 6

And a real learning experience was not to use too many batteries…! ;o)

Because although normally, the more lights you want to use, the more battery power you need, he found out the hard way that you do need to be careful not to use *too* much power…

Most of the LED lights he used needed 3.3 Volts to work, and 2 AAA batteries only have 3 Volts; but he used a 4-pack of them, which gives 6 Volts, and many of his LED lights burned out, so he had to replace them and solder in new ones from the inside which was very difficult… :o(

So he used resistors to lower the voltage, and he grouped together the blue lights and the red lights in parallel circuits (because they use different Voltages) so he can light up the whole spaceships! ;o)

So this was Shy’s first papercraft project incorporating LED lights, but as I said before, he already built many other papercraft models as well; if you want to see some of them, you can do so on his Behance portfolio: link ! ;o)

Thank you for building a Ninjatoes’ (and other peoples’! ;o) papercraft model!

Star Trek runabout, Star Wars TIE-fighter and TIE-interceptor re-vamps and Battlestar Galactica Viper Mk.II and Cylon Raider by Loenf

18-04-2013: Did you know that Loenf likes science-fiction movies and series? Well, maybe all the papercraft models he likes to build should have been a clue! ;o)

This time Loenf built the Star Trek Deep Space Nine runabout, more specifically, the repainted version from Paul McCool!

My originally model was drawn by hand and coloured with aquarel, and it was huge! ;o) Although the repainted version is the same size, Loenf printed it at half that size to make a smaller, 260 mm version: picture 2 | picture 3

And with all his experience as a modeller, Loenf also made a very neat technological looking display stand that really suits the model: picture 4 | picture 5

So yeah, what more to say? It’s a great job by both Paul McCool and Loenf! ;o)

30-11-2012: Here’s a surprise for you! (or maybe not so much, if you have been following Loenf’s papercrafting threads on Papermodelers.com: thread 1 | thread 2 ;o)

Loenf had already re-vamped and built my papercraft Star Wars TIE-fighter a little while ago, and he had promised to tidy up the templates he used and share them with the rest of us, but he also made a TIE-interceptor version: picture 1 !

Re-using the modular command pod and wing pylons and making two new wings, the result is really good I think: picture 2 | picture 3 ! ;o)

The TIE-interceptor is an updated version of the TIE-fighter, with more fire power, greater speed and higher maneuverability thanks to the dagger-like wings that also give it its extra menacing look…

Loenf put a lot of work into re-vamping my original, papercraft hand drawn TIE-fighter model and he did a great job so I’m sure you’ll like it! ;o)

The biggest difference in Loenf’s re-vamped models is in the wings, but he also simplified the cockpit interior a bit, and instead of making a movable top hatch, he made it so that you can simply glue it down.

Loenf didn’t re-draw all the glueing tabs, so don’t forget to cut your own! (or create your own method to join the parts together ;o)

You can get the parts and instructions to build Loenf’s re-vamped TIE-fighter and TIE-interceptor directly from my papercraft webpage in my original TIE-fighter post here: link

And Loenf also plans to upload the files to the Papermodelers.com and Zealot forums: link and link

(you need to be a member there to access the download sections on those forums, though!)

If you do decide to build it, Loenf would love to see the result! ;o)

Have fun building!

03-11-2012: If you already saw Loenf’s work on my papercraft Battlestar Galactica Viper Mark 2 and Cylon Raider, you will not be surprised with the great work he did on my papercraft Star Wars TIE-fighter too: picture

Unlike my Battlestar Galactica models though, the parts for my papercraft Star Wars TIE-fighter were all drawn by hand and coloured using aquarel.

But because Loenf wanted it to have a computer-made look, he did a lot of work re-drawing and re-painting all the parts on the computer first!

He also modified the wings a bit, making them a little thinner, and reinforcing them with some corrugated cardboard to increase their stiffness.

Not surprisingly, he did a great job, as you can see for yourself: picture 2 | picture 3

Loenf’s has also uploaded some more pictures of his re-drawn TIE-fighter (and lots more great papercraft models he built!) to his Loenforama site: link

Loenf also posted his re-drawn TIE-fighter pictures in the Paper Modelers forum: link (you need to be a member there to see the attached pictures, though)

29-01-2011: After his fantastic build of my Battlestar Galactica Viper Mk.2 model, Loenf now also made the Cylon Raider: picture 1

Here’s another picture of the two together: picture 2

He found the wings a little bit difficult to build, he says, but I think they look great now, and here are some more pictures to prove it! ;o)
picture 3 | picture 4 | picture 5

Update: if you want to see more pictures of Loenf’s Viper Mk.2 and Cylon Raider, you can visit his Loenforama website, with several more papercraft dioramas from series like Aliens, Star Trek, Star Wars and more!

14-01-2011: It’s his first build of this year, he says, but I’m sure Loenf has built “a few” paper models before…! ;o)

His Battlestar Galactica Viper Mk.II build looks simply amazing! Here are some pictures: picture 1picture 2

It was done by Loenf, and not only did he a fantastic job building it, he also modified the cockpit so you can look inside!

He used transparant foil for the canopy, and built the cockpit interior himself completely from scratch!

Here are some close-ups of the cockpit and engines:
picture 3 | picture 4

You can read a bit more about his modifications on PaperModelers.com, but you can’t view the pictures there unless you are a member, unfortunately…

Star Trek U.S.S. Voyager by PinkieDraw

20-09-2012: A fellow Star Trek: Voyager fan from the Netherlands built my hand drawn papercraft U.S.S. Voyager starship!

I think PinkieDraw did a great job, but that’s not so surprising for such a creative person: just take a look at the drawings that she made in her DeviantArt gallery: link

Thank you for building a Ninjatoes’ papercraft model!

Star Trek runabout repaint by Neil

22-08-2012: The Star Trek runabout that Neil built, is actually the repainted version that Paragon made from my original, hand drawn one.

But Neil went even a little bit further than that: the runabouts are kind of the workhorses in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and one of their features was that they could swap out the middle-section of the ship, so that they could always bring the right tools for the job (although I don’t remember if they ever really used that feature on the show?)

Neil wanted to recreate that feature in the paper model, and he used magnets to do so! Unfortunately, the magnets that Neil used were just a little bit too weak, so only the cockpit is removable on his build.

But I think the idea is solid and with stronger magnets, it should work great! ;o)

For more pictures and to see how he did it, you can check out the post on his own weblog here: link

And if you want to see some of Neil’s other Star Trek posts and papercraft models he built, you can use this link: link

Star Trek Deep Space Nine “Rubicon” runabout by Paul McCool

22-06-2012: What started as a digital repaint of my Star Trek Danube-class runabout, quickly became a big project with Paul not only repainting the parts, but also tweaking them to get the model exactly the way he wanted: picture

Some parts even took him several tries to get them *just* right (picture) and what’s more, he included markings for 14 (!) different versions! But there’s so much to tell about this repaint, you should really visit Paul’s Rosco Files weblog to read all about it: link

Parts and instructions to build your own repainted version are available here (together with my original hand drawn version) and on Paul’s own weblog here.

Have fun building! ;o)

17-11-2011: Paul McCool built my Star Trek Danube-class runabout “Rubicon” (picture) for a reason.

If you visited my papercraft Star Trek page, you might recognize his name: he repainted my Type-10 shuttlecraft “Chaffee” before, and now he is doing the same for my “Rubicon”!

As you can see, he built my original version first, and was surprised (shocked? ;o) to see how big it was (apparantly, it’s almost as big as the studio model! ;o)

And he’s not just repainting it, he’s doing a lot more than that! You can read up on it on his own weblog, The Rosco Files: link

It’s not quite done yet, but if while you wait you want to get an idea of what you can expect, have a look at the “Chaffee”: link

Stay tuned! ;o)

Thank you for building (and repainting ;o) a Ninjatoes’ papercraft model!

Star Trek Enterprise NCC-1701-D by Elengwat

27-04-2012: Elengwat built this papercraft Enterprise-D, the starship from the famous captain Picard from the TV show Star Trek: The Next Generation, as a gift to his brother.

Of course his brother liked the gift, which is not surprising because Elengwat did a great job on the small, thin parts that give the Enterprise-D its distinctive shape: picture 2

In Elengwat DeviantArt’s gallery you can find the other pictures he made of the Enterprise-D (link) and lots more artwork: link

“Delta Flyer” by Terry

22-02-2012: Terry from Saskatchewan, Canada made this “Delta Flyer” for the Star Trek diorama he made for his home theater!

I think from the picture, you can already see that’s a little bit different than usual; that’s because it’s not made from paper, but from plastic window blinds!

Using the parts from my papercraft “Delta Flyer” as reference, Terry re-created the shapes using scrap pieces of 2 inches wide window blinds which he heated to they could be bent into the right shapes: picture 2 | picture 3

With baseboard putty, he filled the seams between the window blind pieces, and after a good sanding, he painted the “Delta Flyer” in the appropriate colours: picture 4

He added a lot of nice details to his plastic “Delta Flyer” (he even added lighting!) and the result looks really great: picture 5 | picture 6

For many more pictures of this wonderful build, you can see Terry’s Photobucket gallery here: link

Thank you for downloading and building a Ninjatoes’ pape… ehm, window blinds model! ;o)

LEGO Pirate Captain Redbeard by Jon Leslie

02-04-2011: When some people build a paper model, they really go all the way. And Jonathan Leslie is such a person. :o)

Earlier, Jonathan Leslie already did an absolutely amazing job building the “Going Merry”, and now he also made my LEGO pirate Captain Redbeard!

Where do I start? The reason why it’s so shiny for instance, is because he coated the model with “Mod Podge” as a clear finish: picture

He also reinforced all the hollow parts with tissues soaked in glue: when the glue dries, the tissues will become hard and form a sort of honeycomb structure inside the parts: picture

That way, hopefully it will have a better chance of surviving when being played with by young kids! ;o)

You already noticed the feather plume, of course: I didn’t include one in the paper model, but Jon made one out of pipe cleaners: picture

And last but not least: Jon went on Bricklink and got himself a real LEGO Redbeard minifig!

He made a (not-so-secret ;o) compartment for it in the back of the leg (he even had to made extra room for the feather): picture 1 | picture 2

Like he did with the “Going Merry”, Jon made a great build page again with lots more pictures of the techniques he used: link

So there you have it: an excellent customized version of Captain Redbeard (a.k.a. Kapitein Knoest)!

25-09-2006: Jonathan Leslie is what you call a “space enthustiac”. He has his own website, The Lower Hudson Valley Paper Model Giftshop, where you can download a lot of nice science fiction and space papercrafts (it’s also the d/l mirror for the Defiant redraw).

Jon has a lot of experience building all kinds of paper models, and this time he built the “Going Merry”!

The rigging is made by soaking thread with “cyanoacrylate glue”. This hardens the threads and bonds them together, as you can see in his “Going Merry” WIP pictures.

Thank you for building these Ninjatoes’ papercraft models!

U.S.S. Voyager by Andrew

13-05-2010: After having some problems with another model, Andrew decided to take a break from that one and try my U.S.S. Voyager first.

The U.S.S. Voyager has quite a few difficult shapes but he did a great job, as you can also see in the other two pictures that Andrew sent me: picture 2 | picture 3

Thank you for building this Ninjatoes’ papercraft model!

Delta Flyer by Cedric

12-06-2009: Cedric is a big science fiction fan, so it’s no surprise that he likes building papercraft starships!

He built three so far, the “Delta Flyer” you can see above from my own website, and the Miranda-class U.S.S. Reliant and a simple Borg cube from SF Paper Craft Gallery.

You can see a few more pictures at Cedric’s homepage: link

There are a lot more Star Trek and other science fiction papercraft models out there on the internet, so Cedric might do another one soon…

Thank you for building a Ninjatoes’ papercraft model!

Final Fantasy models & “Delta Flyer” by Pierre Janin

05-11-2008: Pierre Janin did it again! ;o) A new picture and build thread thread from Yuna this time!

30-08-2008: Here’s a new picture and build build thread from Pierre Janin’s latest build of one of my models: Auron, from Final Fantasy X!

14-07-2008: Not only did Pierre Janin from Switzerland do a great job building my “Delta Flyer”, he also documented his progress in a build thread over at Le Forum en Papier with good pictures showing step by step how he built them.

He did the same for Rikku (picture here). The forum itself is in French, but luckily the pictures are in English. ;o)

Besides being fun to watch, build threads can be quite useful if you’re building the same model and are having some trouble. If you want to see more of Pierre’s completed models, you can take a look at his own Darktrooper page.

Thank you for building these Ninjatoes’ papercraft models!

U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205 by Nathan Dumont

17-01-2007: As you can see, it’s another Star Trek model: the U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205, built by Nathan Dumont from England.

It’s actually the redraw version with improved textures, done by Bill Perry. My original version has “watercolored textures”, and although I actually like the effect, the redraw version looks really great as well.

Nathan has his own website about all kinds of stuff at http://www.nathandumont.com/, and he has uploaded a few more pictures of his paper Defiant there.

Deep Space Nine by Martin

16-06-2006: with all those “Trekkies” around, I was wondering when somebody was going to send me a picture of one of my Star Trek models they built.

Well, here it is: Deep Space Nine, built by Martin from the Czech Republic. The photo was taken with a mobile phone, but it still looks better than most of the pictures I took with a regular camera… ;o)
